About the Artwork.
The interactive artwork which I have chosen for my ‘ Interaction Studies ’ first assignment is entitled ‘ Floating Numbers ’. The artwork was developed by ‘ Art + Com ’ with the help from ‘ Hurlimann + Lepp Ausstellungen ’ in conjunction to a special exhibition held at the Jewish Museum, Berlin in the year 2004. For this installation, the ‘ Art + Com ’ and ‘ Hurlimann Lepp Ausstellungen ’ used the 9 x 2 meter interactive table as its interface. This enabled the interactive table to be perceived as a place of communications and exchange of ideas.

Aside from that, a mass of number flows in continuum on the
interactive table surface. Individual digits appeared randomly at the surface of
this stream of numbers and once touched by a visitor, the interactive table revealed its hidden information to the individual in the form of texts, images, movies as
well as animations. The hidden information of the numbers depended on the context,
ranging from science, religion or art products.
First topic of discussion.
The first topic of discussion is ' What attracted you to this piece of art piece in the first place '. Frankly speaking, the part of the ' Floating Numbers ' which attracted me in the first place was the part whereby the artists was able to present the information to the society in a new manner and not only through reading text books or magazines but also through pictures, films as well as animations. For instance, numbers are commonly seen as quantitative measures of entities by the society today. Depending on the context however, they often also have religious, historical, mathematical and philosophical meanings.
The second topic of discussion is ‘ How did you feel when you first saw this interactive art ’. Honestly, I am quite envious with the ' Floating Numbers ' content design as it is computationally designed and generated through real time. This means that the artist uses an autonomous behavioral system for the audience to communicate with the art. For example, the numbers floating on the board have their own specific behavior, moving along different current, moving forward, swishing like a fish depending on their length.
The goal was to offer an autonomous system giving the users the impression that they are engaged with an independently acting and non - deterministic system. Another thing that I am quite satisfied with the ' Floating Numbers ' is that it is an excellent example of educational art which can be enforced by the government in improving its current educational system especially in getting the interest of the younger generation to gather information not only through reading books and magazine but also through looking at pictures and watching movies as well as animations.
Third topic of discussion.
The third topic of discussion is ' What element made this interactive art successful in engaging you '. Sincerely speaking, I have to admit that the interactivity of the artwork itself made this interactive art successful in engaging me on this matter. In the case of ' Floating Numbers ', the interactivity took place when the visitor touches a certain number of the stream of numbers shown at the surface of the interactive table. The visitor will be engaged in a dialogue within the application as well as with other visitors about the number they explore.
Another element that attracted me is the material use by the artist in constructing the interactive art during its construction stage. The table by itself was made out of wood and is very robust. On the underside of the tabletop, a grid of in - house developed capacitive sensors are installed detecting the position of the visitor's hand through the wood. Last but not least, this interactive art can be used by children of all ages and this informative artwork is always welcomed by the government in attracting the society interest in education.
Fourth topic of discussion.
The fourth topic of discussion is ' What is the wow factor for you '. I must say that the ' Floating Numbers ' is an interesting interactive to be discussed since it has several factors which are not commonly used by interactive artists in their artworks. One of the interactive art ' wow ' factors that I have discovered is its stream of numbers which interact with the individual and it provides hidden information when the individual touches a number from the stream. In addition, the hidden information is represented by the artists in several manners ranging from text, images, movies as well as animations.
Another ' wow ' factor that I have discovered from the ' Floating Numbers ' is the context of the hidden information which appears only after an individual touches a number from the stream of numbers. The information provided by the artists to the public is not confined only on the current news of what is happening in the world today but it also includes information on the history of the world, famous people, science, religion and art products. Last but not least, another ' wow ' factor of ' Floating Numbers ' is its content design of autonomous behavioral where the numbers floating on the board have their own specific behavior, moving along different current, moving forward, swishing like a fish depending on their length.
Fifth topic of discussion.
The fifth topic of discussion is ' If there is one thing that you want to add to this interactive artwork, what it would be '. Truthfully, I think that the ' Floating Numbers ' interactive artwork presently developed by ‘ Art + Com ’ and ‘ Hurlimann Lepp Ausstellungen ’ is quite perfect. However, if I were given the chance to add something new to the artwork in order to make it more interactive I must say that I would add language translator application.
This is because the ' Floating Numbers ' information is only written in German language. Thus, only those who can read or understand the German language are able to get information from the interactive artwork. However, by adding the language translator application as part of the interactive artwork, the society all over the world can now translate the German language into their own native languages thus making the information sharing and exchange of idea process easier.

This is proven through ‘ Floating Numbers ’ whereby the interactive artwork attempted to bring back its often forgotten or unknown layer of meanings into their interpretation in the age of digital determinism. Another part of the artwork which attracted me is the way the designer designs and generates the content of the artwork. The content of ‘ Floating Numbers ’ is computationally designed and generated through real time, which means that they communicate with the audience using an autonomous behavioral system.
